Class 1 2021 - 2022

Miss Mapp

Class 1 is based in a brand new classroom in the secondary building.  The pupils are mostly Year 7 with three Year 6 pupils. We work from a Primary format in which the pupils are taught by Miss Mapp for all subjects (apart from PE and DT) as part of a transition programme into the High School. This allows pupils to get used to the secondary school building and environment before they start following a secondary school timetable in year 8. This is very exciting and we are finding that our pupils are having a much smoother and settled transition.

Spring 1- We will be starting the term with a World War 1 focus. In English we will study Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo learning about the journey of two brothers during the war. In history we will learn why the war started, what trench life was like and the importance of women during the war. in Spanish we will continue to revise greetings and basic commands along with learning to talk about our family members. In food this half term with Mr Broadbridge the children will start by learning about safety and hygiene in the kitchen before cooking something yummy each week- the pupils are very excited for these lessons!

Spring 2- After the half term break our English learning will be ‘Holiday Island’ Where we will design our own dream holiday island and create an advertisement campaign for people to visit. We will then move on to a poetry focus where children will explore a range of poetry and learn different poetic features and then apply these to their own poems.

In Geography our learning focus will be on Map skills, practicing reading a map, understanding symbols and being able to use a compass- we are hoping to put this into practice during one of out and about sessions! In Spanish our focus will be school- labelling items in the classroom and school environment and saying what subjects we like in school. This half term with Mr Broadbridge the pupils have an art/DT focus where they will be designing and creating their own night lights.

Over the whole spring term-

In RE we are learning about Judaism including important places of worship, beliefs, festivals and modern day worship.

Pupils will also take part in out door learning every Wednesday morning with Mr Fletcher or myself. These sessions will include survival skills, orienteering, walking and cooking. Three of these sessions will also be at Madley Environmental centre where the pupils will do pond dipping, sculpture making and use natural dyes and paints from plants and flowers.

All in all a very exciting term ahead!
