Class 1 2021 - 2022

Miss Mapp

Class 1 is based in a brand new classroom in the secondary building.  The pupils are mostly Year 7 with three Year 6 pupils. We work from a Primary format in which the pupils are taught by Miss Mapp for all subjects (apart from PE and DT) as part of a transition programme into the High School. This allows pupils to get used to the secondary school building and environment before they start following a secondary school timetable in year 8. This is very exciting and we are finding that our pupils are having a much smoother and settled transition.

During the Autumn term our book focus in English is Holes by Lewis Sacher. This is a comprehension focus and so far the pupils are really enjoying the book. Our humanities topic is linked to this and the pupils are learning about drought and the impact of global warming on the environment. In science we are learning all about cells, tissues and organ systems. The pupils particularly enjoyed looking at cells through the microscope! In PSE we are following the Jigsaw scheme of work with our first topic ‘being in my world’ we will learn about responsibility, how we view ourselves, peer pressure and keeping safe online. In RE we are focussing on Judaism, how the religion was founded and how it is practiced today. In maths our focus will be number and calculation, where possible we will relate this to real life situations understanding the importance of maths. Every Wednesday morning the pupils attend ‘out and about’ learning. This will take place at Dinedor some weeks for bush craft skills, outdoor art activities and outdoor cooking. Some weeks however they will visit other places to experience new skills such as orienteering.

It has been a great start to the academic year so far, Keep up the good work!
