Reading and Phonics
Primary
Phonics
We use Read, Write Inc. as our scheme of work to support literacy.
Pupils are grouped into Letters and Sounds Phases, with targeted interventions delivered by a specially trained HLTA and TA. Some classes have daily phonics lessons.
Guided reading
All classes in Primary have a daily guided reading session, and there are also opprtunities for 1:1 reading. Books are sent home to parents and carers so that children can read aloud and continue to enjoy the written word.
Secondary
Sound Reading System – All pupils are screened using the York Assessment of Reading Comprehension. From this data, pupils are selected to received reading interventions using the Sound Reading System programme.
Nelson Handwriting Programme – Some pupils in KS3 are supported on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis, to develop their handwriting skills with the Nelson Handwriting Scheme. Teachers and Key Stage Co-ordinators agree with the SENCo on the most appropriate pupils for this intervention.
