A PE focus around health & fitness

Primary classes, Incredibles, Marvels, Avengers and Titans have been busy working on Health & Fitness towards the end of this term and we have been impressed with the level of commitment and determination they’ve shown.  Pupils have learnt how to use the heart rate monitors to gauge whether they have been working in an ‘aerobic training zone’ (Approx 130 beats per min) and have also improved their technical knowledge and ability to perform the various stations in a circuit as well as the personal and social skills to work independently and in small groups to help each other.

This is just the start of their health & fitness journey with us as from year 7 onwards they will learn the theory behind, what to train, how to train, the muscular system and how to develop their own personal exercise programme ready to complete an induction at the gym in year 8.

Well done to all for putting so much into it and in turn getting the feeling of physical accomplishment from completing a challenging circuit and increasing their heart rate.

Green Spider Climbing

Year 7 have enjoyed the climbing for confidence session this week at The Green Spider Climbing Centre courtesy of Stride Active.

For some pupils climbing a steep wall to over 10 meters was a significant challenge but we were all so proud of how so many pushed themselves outside their comfort zone.

Well Done Year 7.

Hereford District Minors Championships.

This week it was the turn of the minors age group athletics (Year 8) as we took 4 athletes to the Hereford District Minors Championships.

On the track both Callum W and Danny ran PB's in the 100m and Danny also doubles up and completed the 200m shortly after running superbly well. In the girls event Maisie also ran her best time of the season in the 100m finishing 5th in her heat.

On the field Danny & Callum jumped PB's in the long jump with Callum coming 12th in a field of over 20 jumpers with Danny just 2 places behind. Maisie jumped a seasons best in the long jump to finish 10th and another best in the shot to finish just outside the top 10.

Billy M showed his throwing ability taking home 6th out of 19 athletes in the discus and 8th in the shot against a field of 21 athletes.

We are supper proud of the year 8s who competed and showed the ability to produce their best performance of the season when it counted in a competition. Well done to you all.

District Championships

All pupils have been busy setting personal best performances and learning new techniques in Athletics this term.

Pupils from year 7-11 have been working towards their English schools awards schemes with some fantastic results.

Year 9s Tommy C, Tommy S & Lincoln and Key Stage 4 pupils Kyran, Fin & Hayden all took part in the recent district championships with some fantastic results with Tommy C and Fin making finals on the track and both making the top 5, Lincoln showing incredible attrition to complete both the 100 & 800m with little rest in between and Tommy S making the top 10 in a competitive field of over 20 javelin throwers. Hayden jumped a personal best in the long jump and made the top 10. This coming week sees some year 8 athletes take part in the District Minors Championships at the leisure centre. We wish them the best of luck.

The performance of the season came from Kyran who qualified to represent Hereford at the H&W County Championships in Stourport on Saturday where he threw over 30m to walk away with the bronze medal competing against the best throwers from across the whole of Hereford & Worcester.

The top 2 athletes progress to the midlands stage and Kyran is the reserve for this regional round following his 3rd place. A huge achievement that he should be immensely proud of.

Well done to everyone, whether you’ve represented the school or county or just improved your best time or distance you’ve all done the yourself proud.

Well done to Kyran

Sports leadership students from year 10 & 11 have been busy planning and delivering their coaching sessions to each other and also to class 1 who have helped the by taking part at times. They have grown in confidence tremendously and it’s great to see them standing in front of their peers and coaching and encouraging them.

Worcester Warriors Community Coaching Programme - Primary School

Ollie was put forward for Warrior of the Month by Dave Rogers The Worcester Warriors Coach that has been coming in to work with Marvels and Incredibles as part of the Worcester Warriors Community Coaching Programme.

Ollie’s nomination was considered alongside all the community coaches nominees from across Hereford and Worcester and he was chosen by the community coaching team as the best nominee.

We are proud of Ollie and all of our students in the progress they have made and the confidence they have gained from the programme. Marvels will now compete in the Herefordshire Values School Games Tag Rugby Festival this month where they will compete against 11 other schools from across the county.

A huge thank you to Dave Rogers from Warriors for his hard work with our pupils and everyone at Brookfield wishes him well in his new role.

Adam Stansfield Foundation

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Andrea & Shaun Parkin from the Adam Stansfield Foundation, a foundation set up by the family of former Hereford United striker Adam Stansfield, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2010 at the age of 31.  The foundation is ran by Andrea, who is Adams sister, husband Shaun and Adams Mum Gig and aims to raise awareness of cancer but also provide support to schools and clubs to provide facilities and equipment to enhance their opportunities of playing football.

The foundation have donated 3 separate sets of goals, placed on the primary playground, the secondary playground and a set of roll on roll off goals on the grass pitches kindly stored by our friends at the city sports club.

Andrea and Shaun were given a brief tour of the outside areas and could see first hand how the goals have enhanced the schools outside areas and how they are used daily by many of our pupils. They then spoke to the primary classes about the foundation and why it was set up and then received a framed shirt that the school have had done to recognise the support of the foundation that will proudly hang in the reception area at school.

Peter Reed - Subject Lead for PE said

“It was lovely to welcome Andrea and Shaun to Brookfield, it’s such a fantastic foundation that have helped hundreds of schools and clubs across Herefordshire and also in Devon where Adam also played. The legacy the foundation has put in place is incredible and is all administered by close family members which makes it all the more personal. Adam was a legend at Hereford United and is still revered by the fans today, where after 9 minutes fans still applaud to remember their former goal scoring hero, many of whom would barely have been born when Adam was playing. We are proud to recognise Adams legacy at our school and the opportunities the pupils will have following the support from his foundation. Our after school football club continues to flourish and we now plan to have some fixtures against local schools. We would also like to thank Andrew Wood at the Herefordshire Reuse and Recycle Group who have donated football boots from their boot bank to support the delivery of football on the new goals located on the grass pitches”
